Where IBCs provide the small capacity static storage solution, the towable water bowser takes it mobile.
There are two types of towable bowser. Site or highway towable, each with laws attached to how they are employed.
Simply speaking, a site towable bowser (often black in colour) may not be towed on the highway with any payload contained. hence the name “site towable”.
Highway towable bowsers by their design, may be towed on the highway with a payload.
Both types of bowsers on the highway, require a backboard with lights, brake lights and indicators and a number plate which matches the towing vehicle.
The highway bowser features a “break away” advice which, if the bowser becomes unhitched from the towing vehicle, a cable mechanism usually taut, will release and cause the braking system to engage, bringing the bowser to a halt.
Highway bowsers are pre treated, prior to filling and delivering quality assured drinking water, assuring the payload arrives in tip top condition.
All fittings, hoses and the interior of the bowser are treated before the vessel is filled with water from local authority sources.
At this stage, the payload is assured as fit for purpose.
From the point of delivery, guidelines must be followed in accordance with BS8551:2015 to preserve the integrity, pertaining to the storage of the payload.
If this cannot be maintained, then it is advised consumers boil the water before use, to ensure its fitness for drinking.
If the bowser is being used for clean water only, then the regulations are not applicable.
Large Capacity Water Bowsers
Remember, these are not permitted to be towed on the highway.
Unlike 1000 and 2000 litre variants, larger bowsers can be prepaped for clean water use only.
